A Building Energy Rating (BER) certificate is an energy label for buildings which is produced by carrying out a test on the efficiency or lack thereof in a homes heating and energy usage. It rates the building from A1 (most efficient) to G (least efficient). The Certificate outlines your energy usage and carbon emissions based on heat loss through your building fabric (floors, walls, roof and windows) and energy required for ventilation, space heating, water heating and lighting.

From 1 January 2009, a Building Energy Rating (BER) certificate will be required by law for all existing buildings, when they are offered for sale or rent.
